The adventure of cross-country skiing in a winter wonderland
Santa Caterina Valfurva offers keen cross-country skiers a winter wonderland with an exciting choice of trails.
At an altitude of 1800 m (5905 ft), the Valtellina trail snakes across a large plateau and through woodland and features 5 km (3.1 miles) and 10 km (6.2 miles) circuits with climbs and downhill sections and differences in altitude between 190 m (623 ft) and 390 m (1280 ft). The trail also offers some original and even revolutionary technical solutions, including a demanding descent that more experienced cross-country skiers will love. The Valtellina trail has hosted major international competitions over the years as well as many World Cup events. The tourist track runs next to the competition trail, even overlapping in some parts, and features 2, 3, and 5 km (1.2, 1.9 and 3.1 miles) circuits.
The building of both the competition and tourist trails was supervised by Benito Moriconi, coach of the Italian cross-country team and Olympic champion Manuela Di Centa. Both trails are groomed and maintained every day, and the high altitude and unique geography of Santa Caterina Valfurva mean that snow conditions on the trails are always excellent and perfect for skiing. The “La Fonte Centre” at the start of the Valtellina trail is run by instructors from the Cross-Country Skiing School and has changing rooms, showers, a waxing room, locker rooms and equipment lockers, offering all the services any keen cross-country skier could need in one place.
