Gathering
Santa Caterina-Vallalpe cable car | 8:30 a.m.
In cooperation with CAI Valfurva, we are organizing an excitinghike to the Cross of Mount Sobretta in memory of the victims of the Great War.
The Cross, which stands today on the summit of Mount Sobretta at an impressive 3,297 meters above sea level, was erected onSept. 1, 1968, by the boys of the Brugherio Oratory to “NOT FORGET” the courage and suffering of soldiers who fell in battle in the name of freedom.
Santa Caterina Valfurva was a spectator of a timeless clash and still holds the signs of it. The path to reach the Cross is, in fact, populated by the remains of mule tracks and trenches built during World War I.
To “REMEMBER,” we will meet at the start from the St. Catherine-Vallalpe Cabin lift and walk to the top of Mount Sorbetta where the Cross is located. Here you can enjoy the view, admire nature and indelible signs of the past.
OnSaturday, August 27, 2022 together with CAI professionals, you are in for an emotionally rich trip that we assure you will remain in your heart.

Mount Sobretta is one of the largest and most powerful mountains in Santa Caterina Valfurva.
Its shape is peculiar and complex. The summit ridge is about 1 km long and is always above 3,200 m high. At its end, on a debris esplanade, is the Cross, a memorial symbol of the fallen of the Great War, from where the village of Santa Caterina can be seen.
The summit of Mount Sobretta, however, is only a few dozen meters away. From here the view is extraordinary and circular.
Looking north, one can see the highest peaks of the Stelvio: Ortles, Gran Zebrù, Cevedale, Palòn della Mare, Pizzo Tresero, and Punta San Matteo.
Turning clockwise, behind the Corno dei Tre Signori and Monte Gavia, the magnificent Adamello and Presanella glaciers and the jagged peaks of the Brenta Dolomites come into view.
To the south lies the long ridge of the Orobian Alps.
Finally, beyond the deep furrow of the Valtellina, towers the Cima Piazzi and, further away, the Bernina and Engadine mountain ranges.
